The Mission at Carmen Serdan, Mexico

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and keep one's self unspotted from the world. James 1:27

A river in the desert, a home for the homeless, a sanctuary for the abandoned. The Mission at Carmen Serdan is all of these and so much more. There are typically 20 "kids" that call The Mission their home. They range in age from their mid-thirties down to toddlers and each of them is living with varying degrees of disability. The Mission is currently under the direction of Carlos and Jenny Alcantara, a wonderful couple with a heart for these children and an incredible sense of purpose for overseeing the work there. The term ‘sacrificial service’ has been used many times in describing the lifestyle maintained at The Mission and the staff are often in much need of rejuvenation and TLC themselves. There are diapers to be changed, rooms to be cleaned, meals to be cooked and served, facilities and grounds to be maintained and repaired, livestock to be tended, games to be played, songs to be sung, souls to be nurtured, and a God to be praised for such a place as this. That’s where you and I come in....

The Mission is less than 100 miles south of San Diego, yet worlds apart in culture and lifestyle. Transportation is primarily of the two- or four-legged variety. Meals consist of rice, beans and oatmeal. Clothing is functional rather than fashionable. Sunlight and weather dictate waking, sleeping, and activities of daily living. And the lack of phone or internet service lends a very real sense of solitude and isolation to those of us who have never lived without. Yet this environment creates an ideal setting to meet with God. Watch the sun come up over the hazy desert hills with Him. Gaze in wonder at the star-filled Baja skies, reflecting on His awesome power and His tender heart. Cast your cares at His feet and let Him pour over you the pure joy that comes with giving of yourself and meeting other’s needs. The blessing of serving others is never one-sided and you will come away from this oasis with a greater appreciation for the Creator of all things, all places, and all people.

"The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life a ransom for many." Jesus

On Sunday, March 2nd, 2008, a group from Psalm 150 Fellowship will be driving down to spend the day in service to The Mission. We will be leading an afternoon worship service followed by a donut reception (translate: "Manna from Heaven"). We are grateful for this opportunity to participate and would greatly appreciate your prayers for transportation safety, for good health, and for a truly blessed experience for all.

Note from Pastor Greg: Terran and I have been going regularly to The Mission to serve since 1991 when I was an assisting pastor under Jon Courson at Applegate Christian Fellowship in Jacksonville, OR. When we were ministering in Europe, between 2000 and 2005, one place we truly missed and longed to return to was the Mission at Carmen Serdan. The kids there have a way of blessing you much more than you could ever bless them.
